Behind the glass of an aquarium

Grown-ups and children in front of an aquarium full of fish

We sleep lying next to each other.
But it’s like we’ve never met.

This is the life
that I helplessly keep to let flow.

I observe what, from the formless, they call “Reality.”
I watch it like a schoolboy of yesteryear,
standing upright,
stupefied,
Behind the glass of an immense, silent aquarium.

And the shadows are just
small,
transparent fishes.

A brief note on existential loneliness

Communicating subjective perceptions can often be daunting because of the inherent limitations of language and expression. Each individual’s experiences, emotions, and thoughts are deeply personal and unique, which makes it difficult to convey them accurately to others. This difficulty in articulating subjective perceptions can lead to existential isolation, even in the presence of companionship. One gets the impression of observing mute creatures like fish inside an aquarium.

Group of people. Isolation can also occur when in company, having the perception of observing a world enclosed in a large aquarium.
Sometimes, existential loneliness is perceived even when in the company. The reason for this is to be found in the inherent limitations of language and communication. Habit leads us to think it is possible to share anything, but this is continually belied by the facts: those around us often fail to empathize with our intimate reality, making us feel even more frustrated.

Despite being surrounded by people, individuals may still feel deeply alone in their inner worlds, unable to bridge the gap between their inner reality and the outer world. This existential isolation stems from the fundamental separateness of human experiences and the inability to experience another person’s subjective reality truly.

In moments of deep reflection or emotional turmoil, this isolation can become particularly pronounced, highlighting the inherent loneliness of the human condition. While communication is a valuable tool for connection and understanding, it also underscores individual consciousness’s profound mystery and complexity.
